About the CP Nel Museum

Since 1951

It began with Colonel CP Nel, who had bequeathed his valuable collection of antiques to the public in 1951.

The current building which houses this collection (and more) was originally the Oudtshoorn Boys’ High School. A new school was built and as a result the old one stood empty.

In 1972 CP Nel’s collection was moved to the old school which made good use of the classrooms and hall to showcase the history of Oudtshoorn.

The museum was designed by Charles Bullock, where the structure boasts gables, arched windows, stained glass and a clock tower. It was declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1979.
